Liberty Tax Service, Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation Continues to Instill Hope

Virginia Beach, VA (October 31st, 2013) – After months of having knocked on several doors, Sergio Grillo was exasperated, desperate for a solution to his daughter’s financial problems. He knocked on door after door attempting to find the funds to be able to send his eldest daughter, Gabriela Maldonado, 13, to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. She had been invited to attend by two of her teachers who recognized her hard work. However, the family did not have the means to support this wonderful opportunity where she would be able to define herself outside of the classroom and gain critical leadership skills.

It was only by chance that Mr. Grillo came in contact with the Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation. While attending the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN) ceremony as a photographer tasked with event coverage, he realized Liberty’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation’s mission. Liberty’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation awarded three scholarships at this ceremony, and Mr.Grillo saw the opportunity to tell his story to the Foundation representatives that were present to ask for assistance. “Liberty Tax Service and the Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation have a clear view of their desire to empower the Hispanic community. Everywhere we went to ask for help, we were rejected. Liberty Tax Service, Una Familia Sin Fronteras was the only foundation that not only acknowledged our presence, but decided that the opportunity to enrich my daughter’s future was well worth their investment. I am forever grateful for the $500 scholarship they provided her to not only attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference but also for really instilling in her the belief that she can make a difference,” exclaimed Mr. Grillo.

Martee Saldaña Pierson, Director of Diversity Programs for Liberty Tax Service & Executive Director of the Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation, added, “It was our pleasure to help Gabriela participate in the upcoming Junior National Young Leaders Conference, so that as a future leader of our great nation, she can gain the knowledge needed to help initiate change for her and her family. It is the Foundation’s goal to educate the Hispanic community with regards to fiscal and financial educational needs, as well as life-skills requirements that will help Latinos make informed decisions and realize that they have many options. It is through this knowledge that our Hispanic communities will benefit from the empowerment derived from education and be able to ultimately, move forward with greater self-esteem and confidence so they can truly begin “thriving” as opposed to simply “surviving.”

Liberty Tax Service’s, Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation, partners with VALHEN each year to bestow three scholarships to outstanding Hispanic applicants to assist with their education.

Martee Pierson Presents at the Jornada Informativa del Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior

Organization Works to Improve Efforts of International Cooperation to Elevate the Level of Life in Mexican Communities in the Exterior

Mexico City, Mexico  (October 8th 2013) – Martee Pierson, Director of Diversity Programs at Liberty Tax Service’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation, was invited to attend the 98th Informational Conference hosted by the Institution of Mexicans in the Exterior regarding, financial education, remittance, and development.

After five years of building a successful and important rapport between Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation, the IME, and the consulates of the U.S., Martee Pierson was invited to share Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation’s advice on how Hispanics can assimilate to a newfound culture in the United States.

During the event in Mexico City, Martee Pierson had the honor of meeting with the Subsecretary of Mexico to North America and Canada, Dr. Sergio M. Alcocer Martinez de Castro, to further discuss the work done in the United States that also affects “cross border” economic health.

Hispanics oftentimes have a difficult time adjusting into the new financial aspects of the United States when they first immigrate and it hinders them in their potential and future growth. The Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation has been created to extinguish any sort of cultural disconnect through education.

“The initiative and foundation of Una Familia Sin Fronteras, was created by a multitude of Hispanic members that experienced the hardships of being an immigrant of the United States,” says Martee Pierson. “For this reason, we understand the problems that the new immigrant faces and we are determined to cooperate in improving our communities.”

By working as the median of a series of fiscal and financial courses that are provided complimentary nationwide, the Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation has reached hundreds of thousands of Hispanics, providing vital information that has allowed them to not only understand but also integrate themselves easily in the American economy.

Throughout the conference, Martee Pierson was able to educate Hispanics to take flight in fields such as computation, taxes, finance, ethics, and most importantly demonstrating to her audience the options that are available to them.

Liberty Tax Service’s Foundation Commemorates Launch of Binational Health Week

Organization Joins Forces with Government Agencies to Promote Healthy Lifestyles Across North America

Virginia Beach, VA (October, 2013) – In an effort to promote health education in the Hispanic community from physical to mental to financial wellness, Liberty Tax Service’s Foundation,  Una Familia Sin Fronteras, is participating in the 13th Annual Binational Health Week (BHW), which launched on October 1 in Washington D.C. and will continue through October 21. Liberty Tax Service’s, Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation is honored to participate at this international event that is attended by representatives from across Latin America and that is also promoted through Mexican Consulates in the United States.

Currently, Hispanics comprise the second largest and fastest growing racial/ethnic group of people living in the United States. Despite this tremendous growth and presence, Hispanics are often underserved or unable to access healthcare services. In large part, this is a result of the concentration of Hispanics in job sectors that are low wage, high risk, do not provide benefits, as well as of other factors, including low socioeconomic status, language, and culture. Because Hispanics are the second largest group in the U.S., their health and well-being is crucial to the current and future well-being of the entire U.S. population from a public health perspective.

“From our work in communities across the United States, we recognize how important leading a healthy lifestyle is to the future of Hispanics and this nation,” says Martee Pierson, Liberty Tax Service Director of Diversity Programs and Executive Director of Liberty’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation. “We are committed to helping our partners highlight the importance of health and wellness in the Hispanic community. We know that being healthy translates into improved quality of life and prosperity.”

Working in concert with state and federal government agencies from the United States, Mexico, and other Latin American countries as well as community-based organizations and thousands of volunteers, the Foundation, will help promote the weeklong series (in each designated city) which focuses on health education activities, such as workshops, insurance referrals, vaccinations and medical screenings. BHW main partners include the Secretariats of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico and the Health Initiative of the Americas, a program of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health.

Liberty Tax Service Offers 25% Discount for Furloughed Workers

Virginia Beach, VA (October 7, 2013) – Liberty Tax Service is offering a 25% discount off of tax preparation fees to those furloughed federal workers who have yet to file their federal tax return. As the government shut down continues, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stated on their website, “You should continue to file and pay taxes as normal.” Liberty Tax Service is reminding taxpayers of the upcoming October 15th filing deadline.

“We don’t want anyone burdened with penalties or late fees because the federal government has shut many of its doors and taxpayers believe this is a reprieve,” states Martha O’Gorman, Chief Marketing Officer for Liberty Tax Service.

IRS also announced that they “will be unable to issue refunds during this time.” Of the 12+ million taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension this year, it appears those anticipating a refund will have to wait until the IRS operations are back to normal.

A common misconception for filing an extension is that taxpayers can delay payment. This is not the case – if an individual owes taxes the payment deadline was April 15. Late payment penalties and interest are assessed and continue to accrue when you do not send the IRS your tax obligation by the tax deadline. The late payment penalty is usually 0.5% of your unpaid taxes, with the maximum at 25%.

The IRS will also assess a late filing penalty of 5% of the unpaid taxes not paid by the due date for each month your taxes are late, with a maximum also at 25%. If your payment is more than 60 days past due, the minimum late filing penalty is $135 or the balance of the taxes you owe, whichever is less. More importantly, willful failure or fraudulent failure to pay taxes or file a return have higher penalties (including possible jail time).

Taxpayers have a number of options available to pay their tax liability. Those that can pay their tax liability in full can do so by debit or credit card, electronic funds transfer or check or money order. Alternatively, taxpayers may ask the IRS for permission to make monthly installment payments by attaching Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request to their tax return. Another option for payments is to have the funds directly debited from a bank account. A Liberty Tax Service consultant will assist you with these options.

Liberty Tax Service reiterates the importance of double checking your tax return and not rushing through it, possibly missing credits and deductions. There is a little good news for late filers out there, if you get money back, you won’t be charged any penalties or fees.

And many people still have time to file. Liberty Tax Named “Best of the Best” by Hispanic Network Magazine

Virginia Beach, VA (May 29, 2013) – Liberty Tax is being recognized for the strides we have made in our diversity efforts by Hispanic Network Magazine (HNM). Results of HNM’s much-anticipated 2013 survey of the nation’s Best of the Best Top Diversity Employers for Hispanics will be released in their summer issue, expected to hit newsstands on August 15, 2013. “It is an honor to be awarded such a prestigious title for our unwavering efforts. Recognizing and supporting the Latino community is a mission we consciously keep in the forefront of our efforts here at Liberty Tax,” stated Martee Pierson, Director of Diversity Programs, Una Familia Sin Fronteras and Liberty Tax Service. “We have made great connections and created a vast network of contributors for our national movement to offer new opportunities the Latino communities.” One of Liberty Tax’s major contributions to the Hispanic community is Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation, an initiative which focuses on the needs of Latinos nationwide. Liberty Tax plays a major role in developing and supporting education opportunities for Hispanic immigrants. The goal is to provide information that will help the Hispanic communities realize that there are options in their lives that will ultimately lead to empowerment, and finally the self-esteem needed to move forward, “thriving” instead of just “surviving.” The Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation provides educational courses that include information on the ITIN (tax ID), taxes in general, how to start a small business, the importance of education for your children, and various other life skills workshops free-of-charge across the United States through over 400 partnerships that includes the White House Initiative on Education Excellence, the U.S. Department of Education, school districts, churches, libraries, universities, churches, ESL and GED schools, IME (Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior) and other Consulates servicing the Latino community.

Liberty Tax Service Hits a Homerun with New Partner, the Cincinnati Reds!

August 9th Awards Community Luncheon to Honor Latino Baseball Players;

First 100 Latino Families will Get Free Meal and Game Tickets

Cincinnati, OH (August 6 2013) – On Friday, August 9, from 11 am – 2pm, the community is invited to attend an awards luncheon honoring Latino Cincinnati Reds baseball players Aroldis Chapman, Johnny Cueto and Alfredo Simon for their contributions to advancing the city’s Hispanic community.  All attendees will be able to mingle for two hours with these top athletes, but as a special treat, the first 100 Latino families with children will receive free meals as well as tickets to that evening’s Reds game against the San Diego Padres – one of three Hispanic heritage-promoted games this season.

The event, which is presented by both Liberty Tax Service, a subsidiary of JTH Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ:TAX), and the Cincinnati Reds, will be held at Cancun Mexican Bar and Grill. This awards luncheon marks Liberty’s newly formed alliance with the Reds and aims to better connect with Hispanic families by showcasing the beloved game of baseball.  “This is a historic moment for both Liberty and the Cincinnati Reds,” explains Martee Pierson, Liberty Tax Service Director of Diversity Programs and Executive Director of Liberty’s Una Familia Sin Fronteras Foundation. “This event is representative of our new society, where Hispanics are an integral part of the vibrancy and longevity of a city, a community, businesses and sports teams. As a fun way to continue to recognize and celebrate Latinos for their contributions, we gladly invite the public to attend this event–filled with great food and star Latino athletes–and to enjoy a great game.”

Latinos have had a significant presence in the evolution of the “Great American Pastime” since the 1880s. Today, approximately 28 percent of baseball players in major leagues are Latinos with 10 percent hailing from the Dominican Republic. Fittingly, two of the award winners, Cueto and Simon, are from that beautiful island. The third winner, two-time National All-Star, Aroldis Chapman (aka “The Cuban Missile”), is from another Caribbean island, Cuba, which has been producing star players for the team since 1911.

“As a Liberty Tax Services franchise owner, I know first-hand the importance of giving back to the community in which you live,” explains Gina Pinto Williams, who owns the Norwood office with her husband, Michael. “This is an opportunity to also highlight the wonderful contributions that Latinos bring to the game of baseball while at the same time show our appreciation to the community for making our city great.”
